Vic: Man jailed for 17 years for mate s murder

A Victorian Supreme Court judge has found that the lure of poker machines contributed
to a man brutally murdering his workmate over a $6,900 gambling-related debt.

DARREN MCARDLE, aged 38, from Upper Ferntree Gully in Melbourne's east was jailed by
Justice BERNARD TEAGUE for 17 years with a minimum non-parole term of 12 years.

MCARDLE pleaded guilty to the murder of his friend and workmate GEORGE RAKOS, aged
33, on September 14 last year.

The judge said MCARDLE bashed Mr RAKOS five times over the head with a heavy metal
steering lock, with a clear intention of killing him.

The court heard the two men had come up with a scam to borrow $6,900 from the Commonwealth
Bank so Mr RAKOS could pay off his credit card and buy Telstra shares.

But MCARDLE blew the cash on a gambling spree on poker machines and was able to pay
back only $900.

MCARDLE appeared shocked by the sentence and hung his head before being led away.
