What is nuclear medicine?
Nuclear medicine uses tiny amounts of radioactive "tracers" for the diagnosis, prognosisand treatment of common diseases including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
It is also used to kill some cancers.
What are radiopharmaceuticals?
A radiopharmaceutical is an agent, usually a molecule, which has a radioisotope attachedto it which can selectively target a specific tissue, organ or receptor.
How are radiopharmaceuticals produced?
Australia's radiopharmaceuticals are produced at ANSTO's nuclear research reactor atLucas Heights in Sydney and at cyclotrons in Sydney and Melbourne.
