NSW: 2,000 Australians returned payments as scam mail halted

The New South Wales government says an estimated $330,000 will be returned to around
2,000 Australians duped by an Europe-based scam mail company.

Fair Trading Minister REBA MEAGHER says a further 5,000 letters bound for more unsuspecting
consumers will be destroyed.

She says the group of companies will be stopped from sending misleading promotions
to Australian consumers.

Ms MEAGHER says the company, trading under the name of Freidrich Muller, has sent at
least 12 promotions to Australians during the past year.

She says the misleading and deceptive offers call on consumers to send anywhere from
$50 to several hundred dollars for guaranteed major prizes, miracle cures or lucky charms.
