NSW: Carr urges people not to stay at home this New Year's Eve

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR is urging people not to let the threat of terrorismkeep them at home this New Year's Eve.

Mr CARR says terrorists will claim victory if people stay away from celebrations.

He says unless there's a warning, people are entitled to go out and enjoy themselvesand not hand terrorists a victory by staying at home.

Sydney's celebrations are marked by fireworks displays -- one at 9pm and one at midnight-- this year both designed around the theme of peace.

Mr CARR'S call comes as a poll revealed that just under 80 per cent of respondentsbelieve Australia is a terrorist target.

The poll published in the Sun-Herald found that 60 per cent of those surveyed believeAustralia's relaxed way of life has been changed forever.

Organisers say there's no specific terrorist threat to the New Year's celebrationsand security will be equal to that used during the Olympics.
