Japan's Ambassador to Australia says World War II was a dark period for both countries
.. but improvements in our relationship have been inspirational.

IDEAKI UEDA says today's service is a solemn reminder not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

And 83 year old NEIL ROBERTS .. the only living Australian survivor of the attack ..

says he greatly admires the bravery of the fallen submariners.

He says travelling in the tiny midget submarines was an incredible feat.
